Nice, September 25, 2026. The Port Authority of Santander (APS) received the Green Marine Europe certification this week during the annual Green Shipping Day event. This voluntary environmental certification program for the European maritime industry is based on sector-specific indicators and an independent verification process.
In April 2026, Santander was the first port authority to join Green Marine Europe, also participating in the working group that adapted the certification framework to the European context and the specific reality of ports. This incorporation will also allow the Port of Santander to share experiences with other European maritime and port entities to advance in areas such as decarbonization and biodiversity protection.
"We are proud to have obtained this certification as it recognizes the work the port has been doing for years to move towards increasingly sustainable activity, with concrete projects and actions in environmental matters," said the president of the APS, César Díaz.
He added that "it also reflects our commitment to continue growing with respect for and protection of our environment, and, at the same time, our willingness to go beyond compliance with current regulations, acting proactively and responsibly and committing to transparency and continuous improvement in environmental matters."
The certification, which accredits the environmental performance of the Port of Santander, was collected by the Head of the Infrastructure and Public Domain Area, Christian Manrique; the Head of Environment, Susana Rubio; and the Environmental Technician, Noemí López.
In Santander, environmental performance translates, as Manrique explained during his intervention at the closing session of Green Shipping Day, into actions such as the electrification of the docks with a shore power supply (OPS) system for vessels, a photovoltaic plant on the roof of the vehicle silo that will cover "around fifty-four percent of the port's electricity consumption," or a climate change adaptation plan along with new docks and railway accesses, "included in our 2026–2030 Investment Plan."
The adherence to Green Marine Europe at the Port of Santander is in addition to the EMAS Regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), a voluntary European Union tool that recognizes organizations committed to continuous improvement, transparency, and environmental compliance, as well as the implementation of the PERS (Port Environmental Review System), a unique certification specific to the port system that accredits the port's proactivity in environmental protection.
