The president of the Port Authority of Almería (APA), Rosario Soto, the CEO of Knauf Ibérica, Alberto De Luca, and the CEO of Grupo Torralba, Salvador Torralba, held a working meeting at the headquarters of the multinational company that manufactures laminated plasterboard and dry construction solutions, in Madrid, to analyze the evolution of the sector and coordinate future operational strategies in the province.
At the meeting, the entities addressed the impact of new port infrastructures on the supply chain of the companies, which have significant extraction activity in Sorbas and Tabernas and are one of the main operators in the ports of Almería.
During the meeting, Soto, De Luca, and Torralba highlighted the strength of the gypsum sector in Almería, a leading province in extraction at a European level and the world's top exporter, with a traffic of 13 million tons reached in 2025.
Within this growth framework, Knauf Ibérica's activity is strategic for the port system: the multinational exports raw bulk solid gypsum as general cargo through the Port of Almería and from the Port of Carboneras. For its part, the APA guarantees the logistical solvency and operational capacity necessary to respond to the demand of international markets.
In this regard, the president of the APA conveyed to De Luca the security and strategic solidity offered by the state-owned general interest ports of Almería and Carboneras for the sector.
On the one hand, with the valorization of the facilities recovered in the Port of Carboneras after the agreement signed with Endesa at the end of 2025, which consist of two docks with up to 17 meters of draft, in addition to land surface and water sheet, and, on the other hand, with the expansion of the Pechina Dock in the Port of Almería, currently in the bidding phase and with a two-year execution period, a project that will extend the berthing line by 260 meters, reaching a draft of 18, and gain nearly 4.5 hectares of surface area.
