The United States Central Command (Centcom) confirmed the destruction of five oil tankers linked to Iran. The measure was justified as a retaliatory action against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for assaulting a US Navy vessel.
"Centcom forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers on September 8, after the IRGC attacked a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice in the past two days. The US warship successfully evaded the Iranian attack attempts and continued patrolling regional waters. No US personnel were injured," the unified command communicated.
"In response to Iran's most recent failed attacks, Centcom destroyed the IRGC crude oil tankers Kaviz, Charminar, Horizon 1, and Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, as well as the Derya near Kharg Island. US forces ordered the crews to abandon the vessels before they were hit and rendered inoperable," it added.
In line with Centcom's report, Iran allegedly used these tankers "as part of a multi-billion dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its allied forces in the region (proxies). Iran has no means to defend these vessels."
It is worth remembering that on September 5 of this year, Centcom forces destroyed three Iranian crude oil tankers after the IRGC attempted to attack a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. "All IRGC attempts against US Navy warships have failed," Centcom emphasized.
