The Costa Rican Pacific Ports Institute (Incop) has revealed significant growth in cruise ship arrivals in recent years. The 2026-2027 season is projected to be one of the most important for tourism and port activity at the Port of Puntarenas.
The expectation of receiving 72 cruise ships and around 150,000 passengers and tourists consolidates a trend of sustained growth in visitor arrivals to the Costa Rican Pacific coast.
While 63 cruise ships and 79,000 passengers were received during the 2024-2025 season, for 2025-2026 the figures increased to 64 and 90,000, respectively. For 2026-2027, 72 vessels and 150,000 guests are projected, representing a cumulative growth of 14.29% in the number of ships and 89.87% in the number of people compared to the 2024-2025 season.
In other words, in just two seasons, the number of passengers will practically double, while the number of cruise ships will grow by just over 14%.
"These results reflect the renewed dynamism of cruise activity and the importance of Puntarenas as a gateway for thousands of visitors looking to explore Costa Rica. Each arriving cruise ship represents an opportunity to boost the local economy, generate income for businesses and entrepreneurs, and project the natural and cultural richness of our country to the world," highlighted Wagner Quesada, Incop's executive president.
The expected growth in cruise activity also generates significant opportunities for sectors linked to tourism, commerce, transport, gastronomy, handicrafts, and services, strengthening the productive chain and contributing to the creation of new economic opportunities for Puntarenas and the communities of the region.
Incop works in a responsible, articulated, and technical manner to promote the port and economic development of Puntarenas, creating conditions that favor the attraction of large-scale cruise ships, tourism, employment, and sustainable growth in the region.
