A tanker carrying about two million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil was hit by a drone in Iraqi territorial waters, according to port sources.
In parallel, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that several merchant vessels in the Gulf suffered disabling fire overnight.
The impact on the Panamanian-flagged tanker New Andros caused a fire on board around 6:00 a.m. (03:00 GMT), two Iraqi port officials confirmed to Reuters.
No casualties were reported among the 22 crew members, the officials added.
Previously, UKMTO had reported that several vessels in the northern Gulf and the Gulf of Oman suffered disabling fire during military activity recorded overnight in the region.
The entity added that it was not possible to confirm whether there were casualties or environmental damage.
Separately, UKMTO reported another incident this Wednesday 24 nautical miles from Port Rashid, in the United Arab Emirates. According to the agency, a listing vessel was sighted while anchored, possibly indicating that water had entered after being hit by an unidentified projectile.
Iran recently declared that it had attacked ten vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after the United States sank five Iranian tankers, in the largest declared wave of retaliatory attacks against maritime shipping by both sides since the start of the war six months ago.
