The first methanol-ready container ship has arrived in Peru

August 17, 2026
APM Terminals Callao welcomed the Maersk Tokyo, the first methanol-ready container ship to call at a Peruvian port. The vessel represents a new generation of ships aimed at supporting the energy transition of international maritime transport.
With a capacity of 8,928 TEU, the vessel incorporates a dual-fuel engine that allows the use of conventional fuels or methanol. This technology facilitates the progressive incorporation of alternative fuels as their availability and the required infrastructure on trade routes increase.
The arrival of the Maersk Tokyo highlights the maritime industry's evolution towards more efficient operations with lower emissions. This process also drives the modernization of port terminals and logistics chains to meet the new demands of international trade.
