The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) reported that the South Container Terminal of the Port of Callao projects to reach over 2 million TEUs by 2026, maintaining the performance of the country's main port and a key piece of Peruvian foreign trade.
The projected growth is mainly due to the performance of the gantry cranes installed at the dock. Currently, the terminal operates with 10 such pieces of equipment, each with an average productivity of 28 containers per hour, which optimizes cargo handling and reduces operational times.
The expansion is also supported by the capacity of its complementary infrastructure. The storage yard could handle up to 2.7 million TEUs, while the gate area would reach 2.6 million TEUs, strengthening the flow of goods in and out.
"Exceeding 2 million containers mobilized at the Callao South Dock not only represents a historic figure for the Peruvian port system but also the consolidation of Peru as a strategic logistics hub on the South American Pacific coast. This growth reflects that investments in modern infrastructure, technology, and port efficiency are yielding concrete results for the country," said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera.
The sector head highlighted that these results are a product of sustained investments in infrastructure, equipment, and state-of-the-art technology promoted by the sector through the port concession model. Greater operational capacity and logistical efficiency allow for cost reduction, improved reliability of foreign trade, and increased Peru's competitiveness in international markets.
With these indicators, the Port of Callao reaffirms its position as the country's main logistics hub and one of the most important terminals on the South American Pacific coast. In this regard, the MTC, in coordination with the National Port Authority, will continue to promote modern, efficient port management aligned with the highest international standards.
