Canada Invests C$11 Billion in Six New Icebreakers for Arctic Operations

Canada announced a C$11 billion ($7.95 billion) contract to build six new Polar Class 3 icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard at Chantier Davie in Lévis, Quebec. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the deal on Monday, with construction beginning in 2027 and the first vessel arriving in 2032. The full fleet is expected to enter service by 2038, replacing aging heavy and medium icebreakers operating in Atlantic Canada, the St. Lawrence, Great Lakes, and Arctic waters.
