Strait of Hormuz: Mines and Dual Transit Regime Complicate Return to Normal

The Strait of Hormuz has reopened following a U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, with commercial traffic slowly recovering. However, shipping companies face two major challenges: mines remain in and around shipping lanes, and vessels must choose between an Iranian-controlled northern route and a U.S.-backed southern corridor. On June 20, 55 merchant ships transited carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil, though traffic remains well below pre-conflict levels of approximately 138 daily transits.
