The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will implement new safety requirements for pilot transfer arrangements starting January 1, 2028. Amendments to the SOLAS Convention will establish standards for the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of this equipment on board ships.
These measures address deficiencies identified in pilot ladders, strongpoints, and access systems between pilot boats and vessels. The regulations establish adaptation periods based on ship characteristics and the age of their installations, with the aim of reducing risks during maneuvers.
These changes include the review of equipment, safety procedures, and onboard maintenance, along with crew training to comply with the new standards. Their application will contribute to strengthening maritime safety and international port operations.
