Jan de Nul Wins Contract to Dig Argentina's $10 Billion Waterway
Belgian dredger Jan de Nul NV and local partner Servimagnus SA won a 25-year contract from Argentina's government to upgrade the Parana River shipping lane, the nation's chief trade route. The project requires about $10 billion of spending to deepen the channel from 36 to 40 feet, with provisions to eventually reach 44 feet. The tender was overshadowed by US-China geopolitical tensions, with DEME Group's American partners alleging Chinese influence in Jan de Nul's consortium, allegations repeatedly denied by the winning bidder.
