Orient Express Corinthian anchor damages WWII aircraft wreck off French coast
French maritime authorities are investigating damage to a World War II Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft wreck after the luxury sailing yacht Orient Express Corinthian anchored directly above the historic site in Les Lecques Bay on July 16th. The aircraft, which rested approximately 38 metres below the surface since being shot down in 1944, suffered extensive damage with large sections of fuselage and wings broken apart. The incident has prompted calls for stronger protection of underwater cultural heritage through permanent mooring buoys or no-anchoring zones.
