World Maritime Day 2026: IMO Promotes International Standards in Maritime Transport
The IMO commemorated World Maritime Day on September 24th under the theme "From Policy to Practice: Driving Maritime Excellence," which will continue through 2026 and 2027. Maritime transport moves over 80% of global trade. The IMO emphasized the need to apply existing standards through technical assistance and cooperation. In 2024, greenhouse gas emissions from the sector increased by 5%, while only 8% of the global fleet was equipped for alternative fuels as of May 2025.
