The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) reported the arrival of high-energy swell from the South Pacific, which will affect the maritime conditions of Ecuador's continental and insular coast between today, June 16, and June 18, 2026. The phenomenon will generate periods of rough and very rough seas, with the possibility of rip currents.
During June 16 and 17, the highest intensity of the swell is expected, affecting provinces such as Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, and El Oro, while elevated conditions will also be recorded in the insular region of Galápagos. The technical body indicated that maritime conditions will tend to moderate progressively towards June 18.
Given this scenario, Inocar recommended maintaining preventive measures for navigators, fishermen, tourism operators, and users of coastal areas. The evolution of the swell requires attention for maritime safety and the development of activities related to maritime transport, port operations, and the country's coastal dynamics.
