Carnival Cruise Line is taking innovation beneath the waterline by partnering with Jotun, the global leader of marine coatings and hull performance solutions, to pilot the Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS), including the HullSkater; a remotely operated robotic vehicle that inspects and proactively cleans a ship's hull. Carnival Pride marks the first ship in the Carnival fleet to utilize this technology, supporting more efficient ship operations.
Residing on board Carnival Pride, the HullSkater is remotely deployed underwater to inspect and clean the ship's hull. Unlike traditional cleaning methods, the system enables more frequent monitoring and maintenance, helping remove marine growth before it accumulates. Using advanced cameras and sensors, the system travels along the hull to assess conditions below the waterline while performing routine cleaning when needed.
"Maintaining a clean hull is essential for efficient ship operations, and the Hull Skating Solutions allows us to take a more proactive approach to hull maintenance," said Jari Oinas, AVP of fuel performance and decarbonization at Carnival Cruise Line. "As we evaluate the technology aboard Carnival Pride, we see strong potential to support ship performance while advancing our long-term sustainability goals."
Marine growth on a vessel's underwater surfaces can increase propulsion power demand by up to 25–30%, while propulsion represents approximately 60% of a cruise ship's total energy consumption. By proactively grooming the hull and reducing drag through the water, the HullSkater can help improve ship efficiency and contribute to lower fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Carnival Pride is currently serving as the pilot ship for this technology, with the team collecting operational data and insights to assess how the system can support more efficient and sustainable operations.
