MSC Cruises is expanding AQUA by MSC, its new mineral-enriched water service aimed at reducing single-use plastic bottles onboard.
Enhanced with magnesium and potassium, AQUA by MSC is produced onboard using purification technology, and it is available in still and sparkling options.
According to the company, the program is expected to eliminate over four million plastic water bottles each month once fully introduced fleetwide. By 2026, the initiative aims to remove more than 49 million single-use plastic bottles annually across the fleet.
The water is available throughout the ship, including one-liter glass bottles served in main dining rooms, by-the-glass service at bars and buffets, and refill stations for reusable bottles. Guests may also bring their own reusable bottle or purchase one onboard.
Travelers with drinks packages receive unlimited AQUA by MSC water. Complimentary non-mineralized water remains available at buffet dispensers.
MSC Yacht Club guests and guests dining in specialty restaurants will continue to receive traditional mineral water served in glass bottles.
Meanwhile, members of the Cruise Critic community discussed the cruise line's new water offering, sharing divided opinions on the new initiative.
"The only question I have, though, is if water is still free even in the main dining room, it'd be really off-putting if free water just only exclusively in the buffet," wrote jiggnfm. " I do remember they gave us a pitcher full of water, but I believe it's the complimentary water still, and I'm just hoping that water pitcher for the table isn't going away?"
Others welcomed the announcement, with one member saying they look forward to
"I can't wait till this is fleetwide and 49 million single-use bottles are removed from the ships each year," said stuart2468.
One member expressed their frustration with the refill-based system, saying it could be inconvenient for guests who drink large amounts of water throughout the day.
"I understand the problem they are trying to solve, but if you're someone who drinks more than 8oz of water through the course of a day, this solution is the most annoying imaginable," added Mags92.
