The German-owned bulk carrier Emil was attacked by Russian drones near Odesa on 5 August Wednesday. The crew of the vessel are reported to have been rescued and are in good condition.

According to German news media the bulk carrier Emil was repeatedly attacked by Russian drones while sailing around 21 nautical miles south of Odesa in the Black Sea. The drone strikes ignited a fire aboard the vessel and caused failures of technical systems, leaving the vessel unable to manoeuvre.
Another drone reportedly struck the vessel as the evacuations were ongoing. All 11 of the crew members were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
The Emil is flagged in Liberia and owned by the German shipping company Johann M. K. Blumenthal GmbH & Co. KG, based in Hamburg-Altona.
The Ukrainian authorities reported that the grain cargo ship Mera Queen was also attacked in the Black Sea on the same day. One Ukrainian crew member was killed and three injured. The ship was loaded with wheat.
The Russian defence ministry claimed on Wednesday to have struck two cargo vessels in the Black Sea. Although without disclosing the name of the vessels have been claimed by Russian authorities to have been transporting military goods.
Whether the Emil and Mera Queen are the two vessels mentioned in this statement has not been officially confirmed.
