The Panama Canal announced new adjustments to the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks, as part of its water management and operational strategy. The measure seeks to guarantee the continuity of the interoceanic waterway, a key infrastructure for international maritime trade.
As of August 26, the permitted draft will be 48 feet (14.63 meters) and from September 3 it will be reduced to 47.5 feet (14.48 meters). These changes respond to the monitoring of Gatun Lake levels and hydrological projections for the coming weeks, without modifying the number of daily transits.
The adjustments reflect the Panama Canal's planning to sustainably manage its water resources and maintain operational efficiency. Climate monitoring and technical analyses will allow for the definition of future measures to preserve maritime connectivity and the stability of global logistics chains.
