French President Emmanuel Macron described the operation as part of Europe's broader effort to crack down on Russia's so-called "shadow fleet," which evades sanctions and funds Russia's war effort.
The 2000-built vessel, sailing under the Cameroonian flag, had departed from Primorsk, Russia, en route to Singapore when it was approached and boarded by a French naval helicopter.
The tanker's final destination following the interception has not been disclosed by French authorities. According to MarineTraffic data, the 274.2-metre vessel is currently located in the Eastern Mediterranean.
France has reportedly intercepted at least five tankers linked to the network, which consists of vessels used to transport Russian oil and petroleum products by circumventing Western sanctions and funding Russia's war against Ukraine.
