A total of six people, including four crew members and two rescuers, were killed in successive Houthi strikes on a cargo vessel on 11 August. These deaths aboard the vessel are the first shipping deaths linked to the Houthis since the beginning of the US-Iran War in February of this year.

The attacked vessel was identified by Reuters to be the Egyptian-owned Tihamah using the ship's deck and mast configuration, satellite imagery and local topography. According to the Yemeni transport ministry, the vessel was attacked in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, which resulted in the deaths of three Pakistani and an Indonesian crewmember.
In the second attack, the vessel was targeted when rescue boats had arrived on scene. According to the Yemeni Coast Guard, two rescuers from the National Resistance Forces also lost their lives in this attack. Additionally, a total of 10 people were also injured in the incident.
The Houthis, without disclosing the name of the vessel, claimed to have hit a ship carrying Saudi military equipment in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and maritime security firms also confirmed that a vessel was hit in the region on 11 August.
The Tihamah is a Tanzanian-flagged deck cargo vessel built in 2024. The vessel has a length of 63 metres, a beam of 10.8 metres, and a gross tonnage of 796.
