The Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted an emergency resolution in response to the complex security crisis affecting the Strait of Hormuz and its adjacent areas. This resolution requests immediate support from Member States for the efforts led by the Secretary-General of the organization. The objective of these actions is to facilitate the safe evacuation of vessels and all seafarers currently trapped by the conflict in the Middle East.
Given the vulnerability of the crew members, the Committee issued a strong call to governments and international organizations to assist seafarers facing conditions of isolation. Authorities urged the guarantee of essential supplies, such as provisions and medical assistance.
Likewise, the creation of direct helplines and remote assistance services was requested, in addition to implementing efficient channels to keep families regularly informed. Alongside this, it was agreed to promote and expedite crew changes to prevent worker exhaustion.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General was entrusted with conducting exhaustive and permanent monitoring of the conflict's evolution. He must regularly inform Member States and the competent bodies of the institution about any developments in the area.
Aware that geopolitical disruptions in the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman, and the Gulf region impede the normal administrative flow, the Committee approved new guidelines on the training and certification of affected seafarers. This technical tool establishes practical and temporary measures for managing civil maritime documents.
In this way, crews, flag States, and port authorities will be able to manage licenses affected by the blockade, always respecting the international safety and environmental protection standards established in the Training Convention.
