Russia has imposed a temporary ban on the movement of vessels to and from the Port of Novorossiysk between midnight and 5:00 a.m. due to Ukrainian drone attacks, according to three grain industry sources.
The informants noted that the order was verbal and that no official document had been sent to consignees or shipowners.
Furthermore, the sources stated that the port operates normally outside the restricted nighttime hours and that grain shipments have not been affected.
Novorossiysk is Russia's largest port by volume and handles up to one-third of the country's grain exports. It also transports oil, metals, and containerized goods.
The ban adds to traffic restrictions introduced earlier this month in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait.
A government order published on July 21 prohibited vessels from anchoring in areas lacking air defenses in the port of Azov, in the Sea of Azov, and in the port facility of Kavkaz, in the Kerch Strait.
Novorossiysk is seen as a likely destination for export-bound grain being diverted from the Sea of Azov.
Wheat futures contracts for September on the Euronext market rose by 4.5% after the news of the nighttime closure.
