The Palau-flagged oil tanker Settebello suffered fire after being attacked by a US missile while operating in Oman on 10 June leaving two dead and one seafarer missing.
According to Manoj Yadav, general secretary of Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) the deceased crew members were identified as a deck cadet and an engine fitter, while the vessel's chief engineer remains unaccounted for. Earlier India's Ministry of External Affairs reported that 3 crewmembers were missing and 21 rescued. The tanker was carrying 24 Indian crewmembers at the time of the incident.
The incident occurred at 09:30 UTC near 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, Oman. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the incident stating that they fired precision munitions into the ship's engine room after the vessel failed to comply with directions from U.S forces.
India has condemned the attack on the vessel and has formally raised the incident through diplomatic channels and seeking accountability for the incident. The incident follows a similar strike on the tanker Marivex on 8 June, after which the Omani Navy rescued all 24 Indian crew members from the vessel and no casualties were reported.
