The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces carried out a series of strikes against Iran on July 7, in response to Iran's attacks on three crude oil tankers namely the Marshall Islands-flagged LNG carrier Al Rekayyat, the Saudi Arabia-flagged tanker Wedyan, and the Liberian-flagged tanker Cyprus Prosperity. The tankers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations UKMTO also confirmed without disclosing the names of the three vessels that were attacked by unknown projectiles on 7 July while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
UKMTO reported one tanker suffered an engine-room fire after being hit on its port side, while the other two sustained structural damage. No casualties or pollution were reported, and the affected vessels were able to continue to designated ports or anchorages.
In retaliation, CENTCOM launched strikes over more than 80 Iranian military targets, including air defence systems, command and control facilities, coastal radar sites and anti-ship missile capabilities. The operation also targeted more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast attack boats operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM described the attack on vessels as a breach of the ceasefire agreement that threatened freedom of navigation through Strait of Hormuz. It said U.S. forces remain prepared to respond to further threats and protect international maritime commerce in the region.
