US forces briefly boarded and redirected the oil tanker Celestial Sea on 20 May in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was suspected of attempting to violate the US blockade on Iranian ports.
The tanker was transiting the Gulf of Oman with its Automatic Identification System (AIS) reporting Khor Fakkan in the UAE as its destination. US forces suspected the stated destination was false and boarded the vessel.
The boarding was conducted by US Marines via helicopter. After searching the vessel, the crew was ordered to alter course. The tanker was then released. According to US CENTCOM, this latest redirection brings the total number of vessels redirected since the start of the blockade to 91.
The Celestial Sea is part of Iran's shadow fleet, which is used to trade sanctioned oil. The NGO United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) stated that the vessel was blacklisted in 2023 while operating under the name Harmony.
The Celestial Sea is an oil tanker built in 2007 and is currently sailing under the flag of Arura. It has a length of 123.27 metres, a beam of 19.4 metres, and a gross tonnage of 6,601.
