The Philippines received a shipment of Iranian crude oil this month, according to vessel tracking data, likely the country's first since the war in Iran disrupted supply from the Middle East.
The Suezmax tanker Ocean Start delivered Iranian crude to Petron's Bataan refinery on May 17, according to Kpler data. The tanker has the capacity to transport one million barrels of fuel.
The vessel received the cargo in early May via a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer in waters near Singapore from another Suezmax vessel, the Kylo, which had loaded the crude on Kharg Island (Iran) on March 27, data showed.
Kpler data indicated that this was the first delivery of Iranian crude to the Philippines. Another analytics firm, Vortexa, also identified the cargo as Iranian crude delivered to Petron's refinery after an STS transfer.
The Trump administration granted a 30-day exemption from sanctions related to Iranian oil purchases at sea, from March 20 to April 19, in an attempt to ease hydrocarbon prices that had soared after the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran.
The Philippines, which relies heavily on crude imports from the Middle East, also received a US exemption to purchase Russian crude oil and petroleum products, the country's energy department reported in late April.
