The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) welcomed the European Union's (EU) provisional agreement on legislation to eliminate import tariffs on US products.
However, the USTR also noted that Brussels must address the non-tariff barriers and regulatory issues identified in the trade agreement reached between the two blocs last year, adding that it will continue to review certain restrictive amendments included in the EU legislation to "assess whether it complies with the Joint Declaration."
The legislation agreed upon on Wednesday, May 20, aims to fulfill a key part of the trade agreement reached with Washington in July last year, as well as to avoid the increase in US tariffs on some key European Union products that President Donald Trump had threatened earlier this month.
