The Chilean Wood Corporation (Corma) warned that the damage suffered by the railway infrastructure in Lirquén, due to the high tides that are currently affecting the Chilean coasts, could impact rail operations at the DP World maritime terminal.
In particular, the organization referred to a sinkhole caused by the phenomenon in a section of the railway line north of the port facility, a section about 1,000 meters long used to maneuver trains towards the sidings located inside the installation. The access of convoys to and from other areas of the region and the country is done from the south.
Regarding the damage caused by the storm, Margarita Celis, regional manager of Corma Bio Bio and Ñuble, stated that "although some minor damages have been recorded, mainly associated with fallen trees, specific road interruptions, and damage to the railway network, productive activities continue to operate normally."
"The main concern is concentrated in the Bio Bio Region with a sinkhole affecting the northern railway access to the DP World Lirquén terminal, which could slow down railway operations to the terminal," explained Celis.
Likewise, the regional manager said that "so far, Corma's member companies do not report significant impacts on their operations as a result of the frontal system. Some workers have been affected by the conditions derived from the storm, who are being supported by the companies, without any situations of greater severity."
"Companies continue to monitor the evolution of climatic conditions, while Corma actively participates in the Cogrid (Regional Disaster Risk Management Committee), coordinating actions with authorities and the various organizations involved to contribute to emergency management and safeguard people's safety," indicated the executive.
