The Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso (EPV), members of the Valparaíso Logistics Forum (Folovap), the Valparaíso Port Authority, port terminals, and local authorities agreed on a set of preventive measures in anticipation of a frontal system that will affect the region between Thursday, July 16, and Monday, July 20.
Due to the meteorological event, the port was scheduled to close for all types of vessels, with the final maneuver confirmed by the Valparaíso Port Authority for 23:59 on Wednesday, July 15.
Furthermore, vessels were instructed to clear their berths and either seek shelter or maintain autonomous navigation capability.
In the logistical sphere, coordination between EPV, Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS), Terminal Portuario Valparaíso (TPV), and transporters will focus on preventing truck congestion and safeguarding driver safety, prioritizing the continuity of cargo transfer during the available operational window.
Concurrently, the municipality and road services are concentrating efforts on cleaning sewers and underpasses at the port's access points.
"Starting Thursday, July 16, on-site inspections will be carried out to define traffic cuts on Altamirano Avenue, given potential risks of sinkholes and strong waves. A possible closure of this avenue is also being evaluated in the event of an IMO cargo evacuation, which could require the extension of emergency deadlines coordinated among system stakeholders," EPV communicated.
"Permanent communication protocols have been established, whereby the Navy's Meteorological Center will issue updates every 24 hours, and the Valparaíso Port Authority will distribute minutes and evolution charts of the frontal system every 12 hours, adjusting operational decisions according to the front's development," the letter concluded.
