Transport between the Netherlands and southern Germany has almost always been carried out by road. However, thanks to the collaboration between Outdoor Life Group (OLG) and Bos Dynamics, since May, trailers have been transported by rail via Rotterdam to Munich, and then continue their journey to destinations in Germany and Austria.
Gilbert Bal, Commercial Manager at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, commented that "this is where Rotterdam's strength lies. The port has an extensive network of rail connections to economic centers throughout Europe. This allows companies to connect relatively easily to existing land corridors and integrate intermodal solutions into their supply chains."
The partners found a solution in the Bayern Express, an already existing rail connection between Rotterdam and the German capital. The trailers are delivered by truck to the Rotterdam Rail Service Center (RSC Rotterdam), before being transported by rail to southern Germany and subsequently distributed by road to their final destinations. The return journey also follows the same corridor.
The service is provided by the rail operator Hutchison Port Europe Intermodal (HPEI). By shifting a significant part of the route from road to rail, the solution reduces both the distance traveled by road and CO₂ emissions.
The solution did not require any new infrastructure. The main challenge lay in organizing the supply chain and coordinating the processes between the sender, the carrier, the terminal, and the rail operator.
