ABB has signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to supply an integrated power and propulsion system for the semi-submersible heavy transport vessel HTV Grand Tour. This 230-meter long vessel, commissioned by global offshore construction company Allseas, will be a key link in the logistics chain supporting the European offshore wind industry.
Upon its delivery in 2028, the Grand Tour will transport large converter stations from manufacturers in Asia and Europe, and transfer them directly to Allseas' construction vessel Pioneering Spirit for installation.
Converter stations are essential for long-distance power transmission offshore, as they transform alternating current (AC) electricity from turbines into direct current (DC) for transmission from the platform to shore via an electrical cable.
Power, control, and maneuverability are key attributes for the Grand Tour vessel, which will carry loads of up to 40,000 metric tons on its aft deck and position itself alongside the Pioneering Spirit while lowering its main deck below the waterline to directly install the converter stations onboard.
ABB's supply includes four 3.5 MW ducted Azipod units, providing sufficient thrust to meet the Grand Tour's traction and dynamic positioning (DP) needs. With 360-degree rotation, the format will allow for precise maneuvers to position itself at the bow of the Pioneering Spirit.
The units will be equipped with optimized nozzles to ensure high efficiency even during navigation. Gearless Azipod units reduce mechanical losses and fuel consumption, contributing to lower emissions, as well as reduced noise and vibrations, compared to conventional mechanical thrusters.
Furthermore, the gearless design helps minimize the need for lubricating oil, thereby reducing maintenance and, consequently, operating costs. The compact size of the technology provides design flexibility and facilitates efficient installation.
The complete ABB package includes a medium-voltage AC power plant with a closed-ring topology, controlled by the PEMS power management system and an enhanced power plant protection system (EPPS). The comprehensive power transmission solution includes remote condition monitoring and maintenance capabilities.
