Maersk marked a historic milestone in India's maritime sector by becoming the first international shipping company to acquire an entirely Indian-made export-import (EXIM) container.
The inaugural unit was unveiled at the inland depot operated by the alliance between the Danish company and the Container Corporation of India (Concor) in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh.
This achievement is the culmination of a 16-month process that began in February 2025, when Maersk's Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Robert Maersk Uggla, met with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in New Delhi. During the meeting, the authority urged Maersk to actively support the development of world-class maritime container manufacturing in India.
"I am very proud of what we have achieved, from the shared vision to the presentation of the container today. We have shared our global standards, relied on the best technical professionals, and collaborated with Indian manufacturers and the Ministry to make this possible. It is proof that India's manufacturing ecosystem is preparing for global demand. With the right investments in production facilities and a supportive ecosystem, we are confident that the industry will succeed," stated Ahmed Hassan, Senior Vice President of A.P. Moller.
Maersk's container quality assurance standards are among the most rigorous in the global shipping industry. Every container in Maersk's fleet must comply with ISO structural and dimensional specifications, the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), and Maersk's demanding quality requirements.
Structural prototype tests, in accordance with ISO 1496, including stacking, lifting, racking, floor strength tests, and watertightness validation, are conducted under the supervision of a classification society and with the presence of Maersk representatives. The first Indian-made container has passed all these tests, obtaining full CSC safety approval.
