MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft said their design planning and contract talks for 180,000gt "New Frontier" newbuilds have reached an advanced stage.
In a joint statement Wednesday, the companies said they're "confident that they will successfully conclude the negotiations in the coming weeks."
They said such newbuild planning involves an "extensive and complex set of contracts, for which at least six months is typically required."
The update follows a December letter of intent for four ships plus two options announced at Germany's Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin in a very public signing.
On hand were MSC Cruises' Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, Meyer Werft CEO Bernd Eikens, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche and Energy Minister-President Lower Saxony Olaf Lies.
The contract will ensure Meyer Werft's production capacity well into the next decade.
The "New Frontier" ships would each have a maximum passenger capacity of 5,400 and would be delivered annually starting in 2030.
MSC Cruises for years has built at Chantiers de l'Atlantique, where it still has orders for four ships through 2030.
