The technology group Wärtsilä supplied an advanced simulation system for the new Novatug training center in Terneuzen, Netherlands. This system has been designed to promote safer tugboat operations and raise the standard of specialized captain training.
Developed in collaboration with Novatug, the innovation and R&D division of Multraship Towage & Salvage, the simulation system includes full-mission simulators, mixed reality environments, an instructor operating station, and a post-operation analysis room, in addition to customized digital models, including a Carrousel Rave Tug (CRT) model for specialized tugboat captain training.
This new set of simulators allows for high-fidelity modeling of Novatug's new CRT, providing improved control over assisted vessels during their port maneuvers. The CRT overcomes the growing challenges related to port calls by very large and ultra-large cargo vessels, by improving their steering and braking capabilities in confined spaces, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Therefore, the specially configured Wärtsilä simulators, including digital models for mandatory professional development and competency training, as well as for applied research, enable tugboat captains to acquire proficiency in handling the CRT and other modern tugboats in a safe and controlled environment.
"We value Wärtsilä's vast experience in simulation to model the Carrousel Rave tug and provide the most realistic training environment possible. This strategic training alliance will improve the safety and efficiency of towing operations for shipping companies and ports worldwide, raising the standard of specialized training," stated Leendert Muller, Managing Director of Multraship Towage & Salvage.
Novatug's CRT uses a patented carousel-type towing system, where the towing point can rotate around the tugboat. This design keeps towing forces under control and eliminates the risk of capsizing due to load, while improving braking and steering, allowing assisted vessels to be maneuvered more safely and efficiently in port. The inclusion of the CRT in the Wärtsilä simulator allows tugboat captains to realistically and repeatedly rehearse specific CRT maneuvers, providing instructors with a consistent way to assess competency before applying the skills in real operations.
