Royal Bodewes celebrated the christening and launching of the MV Hagland Poseidon, the fifth 4850 dwat Hybrid Eco Trader for Hagland & Hagland Shipbrokers, which in 2024 signed a contract with the Dutch shipyard for the construction of four self-unloading bulk carriers of approximately 5,000 DWT. Siri Wendelboe Johansen was the godmother at the ceremony, which culminated in a side launch, as is customary for the Dutch shipyard.
Both the Hagland Poseidon and the other three vessels aim to achieve zero emissions in port and significant reductions in emissions at sea. The shipping company's goal is to achieve greener short-sea shipping by reducing local and global greenhouse gas emissions, as well as decreasing noise.
The vessels will replace older ones with traditional propulsion systems with modern, optimized vessels featuring plug-in hybrid battery systems and electric excavators.
Following the delivery of these vessels, two-thirds of Hagland's own fleet will be equipped with hybrid battery technology.
This series represents an evolution of the three vessels the shipping company received from the same shipyard in 2022 and 2023. Several innovations have been implemented in this series, such as the heat-to-power conversion system, which recovers waste heat from exhaust and cooling systems and transforms it into electricity.
"We are achieving excellent results with the implemented improvements. Compared to our 15-year-old vessels, we are achieving a reduction of over 40% in CO2 emissions during navigation, and potentially an additional 15% if more ports with shore power connections are available," the shipping company celebrated.
The vessels are equipped with an engine solution that can be adapted to run on methanol in the future. In total, Hagland Shipping is investing over USD 80 million, the largest investment in the group's history, in a project that has received support from the NOX Fund's fleet renewal program for short-sea shipping.
Construction is expected to be completed after sea trials in mid to late August 2026. An additional vessel is scheduled for delivery in late 2026, and the last in the series in the first half of 2027.
