A major collision occurred between a UAE-flagged cable-laying ship, Niwa, and a Liberian-flagged container ship, Papu, overnight on 28 May outside Karachi Port, resulting in significant damage to the cable vessel and the loss of a container overboard.
The incident occurred near an anchorage area as Niwa was approaching Karachi from Salalah, Oman, while Papu was departing for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. No injuries were reported.
The impact caused a hull breach and significant structural damage to the cable ship Niwa. Pakistani news media reported that the containership Papu remained unharmed with just one container falling overboard.
Subsequently, port tugs responded to the emergency and escorted the damaged Niwa to a berth in Karachi, while Papu was directed to remain at anchorage pending inspection.
Pakistan's Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, said the initial findings suggested possible negligence by the captains of both vessels. He also noted that the authorities are assessing vessel damage and potential environmental impacts.
Port operations have continued without disruption as investigations into the cause of the collision remain ongoing.
