Wallem Group released details of an incident where a vessel under its management rescued two Filipino fishermen from their sinking boat.
The bulk carrier was sailing from Abbot Point, Australia, to Cam Pha, Vietnam, with a full cargo of 80,000 tons of coal when the crew observed a small fishing vessel in distress, with its crew signaling for help, near the Babuyan Islands, off the coast of the Philippines.
Under the direction of its captain, the bulk carrier stopped and quickly prepared and lowered its lifeboat. The two fishermen were rescued safely and brought aboard in an operation professionally executed by the all-Chinese crew in open waters.
Subsequently, the ship sailed to a rendezvous point where it was met by a high-speed response vessel from the Philippine Coast Guard, and the fishermen were handed over.
The Philippine Coast Guard thanked the Wallem crew for their immediate response and actions to save the fishermen. "We want to extend our sincere gratitude to the captain and the Wallem team for their professionalism throughout the entire operation," a Coast Guard representative stated.
"The rescue is a clear demonstration of the crew's seamanship, their effective training, and their commitment to safety at sea. They ensured that swift and decisive action was taken when lives were in danger," said Subramanian Rajagopal, Marine Safety Director at Wallem Group.
