The Argentine Naval Prefecture provided a training day for 15 students of the "Yacht Pilot" course from the University Extension Center for Recreational and Sports Nautical Activities, during a navigation aboard the PNA YR-7 "Esperanza" Yacht on the Río de la Plata.
The activity allowed future pilots to accumulate navigation hours in these waters and put into practice the knowledge acquired during their training, facing the river's own conditions, such as wind, waves, and currents.
Upon boarding, the students were welcomed by the yacht's captain, Prefect Juan Manuel Frette, along with his crew and the professors in charge, who accompanied the different exercises and provided insights related to maneuvers and nautical nomenclature.
As part of the training program, astronomical navigation practices were carried out aboard the "Esperanza" using a sextant, with the aim of familiarizing the students with this instrument and its application.
During the exercises, sun altitude readings, meridian observations, and azimuth determinations were performed, in addition to horizon corrections and calculations aimed at fixing the exact position of the vessel.
Likewise, an orientation talk on sailing was given, during which the characteristics of the unit, its rigging, and the main maneuvers related to sailing the vessel at sea were reviewed.
