The National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA) reinforced its presence at the “Islas Malvinas” International Airport in Rosario, Santa Fe, to streamline sanitary controls and prevent delays due to the arrival of delegations of athletes and entourages from 14 countries participating in the XIII South American Games.
The operation was carried out within the framework of the competition, which during September is hosted by the cities of Santa Fe, Rosario, and Rafaela, and included the reinforcement of control tasks at that entry point to the country.
Border Agents from the Santa Fe Regional Center inspected accompanied luggage with the collaboration of Pipo, a detection dog that serves at Jorge Newbery Airfield and the Buquebús Port Terminal, in the City of Buenos Aires, both dependencies belonging to the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Regional Center of the organization.
In addition, inspectors from the Metropolitan Regional Center and the Coordination of Borders and Sanitary Barriers collaborated in the management and planning of controls to cope with the increase in passenger arrivals.
The canine brigade is composed of teams made up of a guide inspector and a trained dog that facilitates and makes more efficient the inspections of luggage and transport at the different control points.
When dogs detect organic matter (products of animal or vegetable origin), they sit next to or on top of the luggage. SENASA personnel remove the luggage, tape it to identify it on the scanner line, open it, and if it is a prohibited entry product, it is seized and a record is made, to then be destroyed in the presence of the passenger.
The actions carried out by SENASA aim to protect the zoosanitary and phytosanitary status, national agricultural production, and people's health, and to contribute to keeping open the destinations to which Argentine agri-food products arrive.
