The Prefectura Naval Argentina carried out two training days aboard the PNA YR-7 “Esperanza” yacht, with the participation of 25 students from different institutions linked to nautical training.
In the first navigation, 13 students from the “Practical Positional Astronomy, River and Coastal Sight Navigation” course, belonging to the University Extension Center in Recreational and Sports Nautical (CEND), participated.
During the journey along the Río de la Plata, the participants practiced with the sextant to familiarize themselves with the use of this instrument. Due to cloudiness, it was not possible to take the sun's altitude, so the exercises were carried out by measuring angles to notable points on the coast, horizon corrections, and calculations to determine the position.
Likewise, a sailing navigation was carried out, during which the students received explanations about the characteristics of the vessel and nautical maneuvers, including tacking and jibing. They also participated in steering the helm and in sail maneuvers.
In a second navigation, 12 students from the Helmsman and Yacht Skipper course of the Club Albatros participated.
During the day, they received instruction on rigging and winches, practiced hoisting the main and genoa sails, and worked on basic navigation notions. In addition, their performance in governing the vessel was highlighted.
The activity also included a historical review of the PNA YR-7 “Esperanza” yacht, highlighting its trajectory in international competitions and its function as a training ship.
