Ferrol Port expects to have an operational passenger terminal by spring of next year. This was revealed during the joint presentation by the Port Authority and Global Ports Holding at Seatrade Cruise Med 2026, a leading event in the sector. The president of the port authority, José Antonio Álvarez Vidal, and GPH's regional director for the Western Mediterranean, Francesc Grau, described the commitment to Ferrol by the world's largest cruise terminal operator as a "very important milestone." The presentation took place at the Puertos del Estado stand before representatives of various port authorities and industry professionals.
The president of the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao, José Antonio Álvarez Vidal, highlighted the importance of partnering with a company like Global Ports Holding and affirmed that "it is a strategic alliance, a truly safe bet for the port and for the city." After emphasizing the technical characteristics of the docks and the tourist resources of a region that surprises visitors, Álvarez Vidal expressed pride in presenting the new cruise terminal – Ferrol Cruise Port – which will undoubtedly bring about a significant transformation of our port and a boost to passenger traffic.
The president of the port authority stressed the importance the new infrastructure will have for Ferrol and "the opportunity presented by Ferrol Cruise Port to take another step in the transformation of the port, integrating it into the port-city relationship project." Specifically, he highlighted the transformation being undertaken with the "Abrir Ferrol al Mar" (Opening Ferrol to the Sea) project, which "among other things, will allow the Arsenal, an authentic historical gem, to be seen without its wall, open to all citizens." Before concluding, the president of the Port Authority once again emphasized the importance of the alliance with Global Ports Holding, "which truly signifies excellence in this sector." He therefore stressed the improvement that the terminal will bring, "which we hope to have by spring," and that "from Ferrol's modest position today in cruise passenger traffic, it will represent a strategic advance with a great ally."
Consolidating Ferrol as a Destination
For its part, Francesc Grau from Global Ports Holding stated: "Ferrol represents an important addition to our Western Mediterranean and Atlantic portfolio, strengthening our presence in Spain and expanding our reach across the entire region. We look forward to supporting the new cruise terminal project as it progresses, as well as the opportunities it will generate for both the port and the destination. Our goal is to support Ferrol's long-term growth as a cruise destination, while ensuring it benefits from the experience, standards, and connectivity of GPH's extensive regional network."
The Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao granted GPH the concession to build and manage the cruise terminal in Ferrol port for a period of 30 years. The project will occupy a total area of 960 square meters on the outer dock and will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, a 480 square meter terminal will be built, with construction estimated to begin this year. Operations are expected to commence in the 2027 season.
Ferrol thus joins the 35 ports operated by GPH worldwide and more than 22 million passengers, thereby strengthening its presence in both Spain and the Atlantic region.
