The exclusive 'OE Corinthian', an innovative hybrid-powered sailing cruise ship, received 300 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
The vessel 'Alisios LNG', managed by Axpo, was responsible for the operation.
Last October, the Port of Málaga carried out its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for a cruise ship via ship-to-ship transfer, an operation that allows fuel to be transferred directly from a supplying vessel to a receiving vessel.
The service was provided to the exclusive cruise ship 'OE Corinthian', an innovative 220-meter long vessel belonging to the Orient Express brand, recognized for its cutting-edge design and technology. The vessel combines a hybrid propulsion system powered by LNG with three large rigid sails, capable of providing wind propulsion in favorable conditions.
The supply was carried out by the 'Alisios LNG', managed by Axpo. This vessel, specialized in the supply of liquefied natural gas, supplied 300 cubic meters of LNG to the cruise ship, through a direct transfer between both vessels.
Málaga consolidates its alternative fuel supply service
This action represents a new advance for the Port of Málaga in offering alternative fuel supply services and expands its experience in the different modalities of LNG bunkering for vessels.
The port facility had already carried out its first LNG supply to a cruise ship, the 'Silver Nova', in November 2023, using tanker trucks. Subsequently, in March 2025, it hosted the first LNG bunkering operation for a container ship from another vessel in the port, a maneuver also carried out by the energy company Axpo for the MSC Cargo vessel.
In addition, in September 2025, the Port of Málaga was the scene of the first supply of renewable liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) to a container ship, the 'MSC Gabon', also through a ship-to-ship operation.
These milestones are in addition to the periodic LNG supplies that have been carried out since 2020 on the maritime connection between Málaga and Melilla, through the vessel 'Rusadir', owned by Baleària.
A port prepared for the maritime sector's energy transition
The incorporation of new supply modalities allows the Port of Málaga to respond to the needs of an increasingly diverse fleet and the growing demand for alternative energy solutions in maritime transport.
This activity is part of the Green Port initiative, through which the Port Authority promotes sustainability, energy efficiency, and the transition to fuels with less environmental impact.
With this new operation, Málaga continues to consolidate its capacity to provide specialized LNG supply services, reinforcing its position as a strategic enclave in the Mediterranean and contributing to the evolution of the maritime sector towards more efficient navigation models.
