Carbon Intensity Gateway Recognized for Helping Advance Cleaner, More Efficient Port Operations
Nov. 5, 2026 – The Port of Los Angeles received the 2026 International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) Sustainability Award for its innovative Carbon Intensity Gateway, a digital platform designed to help the Port better track emissions and identify opportunities to reduce its environmental impact.
The award, presented in London on Thursday at the IAPH World Ports conference, recognized the Port in the digitalization category for its use of technology to support more sustainable and efficient cargo operations.
“This international recognition reflects our commitment to using innovation and technology to make the Port of Los Angeles cleaner, smarter and more efficient,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka, who attended the conference. “The Carbon Intensity Gateway gives us another valuable tool to better understand our environmental footprint, make informed decisions and continue moving toward our sustainability goals.”
The Carbon Intensity Gateway brings together emissions information from across Port operations into a single digital platform. By making this information easier to access and analyze, the system helps the Port evaluate emissions, identify opportunities for improvement and guide future environmental planning.
“One of the challenges in reducing emissions is having the right information to understand where improvements can be made,” said Sheeba Varughese, Chief Information Officer for the Port of Los Angeles, who accepted the award on behalf of the Port. “The Carbon Intensity Gateway helps turn complex emissions data into useful information that can guide our decisions. We're honored that IAPH has recognized the work of our team and partners.”
With funding support from the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), the project was developed through the Port's Environmental Management Division in collaboration with technology partners Wabtec and San Diego State University.
The IAPH Sustainability Awards recognize outstanding port projects that advance sustainability, innovation and environmental stewardship worldwide. This year's competition attracted 66 eligible submissions, with 18 projects selected as finalists across six award categories.
The Port of Los Angeles continues to invest in clean technologies, zero-emission equipment and infrastructure, and innovative programs aimed at reducing emissions while maintaining its position as the nation's busiest container port.
