The Port Authority of Castellón is advancing its coastal transformation plan with the commissioning of the renovated Fuente del Moruno in Plaza del Mar. The work recently concluded with the filling, testing of the basin, and new lighting installation.
This project joins other major initiatives currently underway, such as the restoration of the Fuente del Centenario, the tender for the new Port Authority headquarters in the old Comandancia building, which will house the Museo de la Mar, the creation of a new green area nearby that will provide direct access to the sea, and the future technology hub.
Within this revitalization and renovation plan for the coastal facade, other interventions have been carried out, such as improving accessibility in the children's area of Muelle de Costa and creating parking spaces for people with reduced mobility.
The President of the Port Authority, Rubén Ibáñez, highlighted that "the new configuration of the Moruno entrance, which improves access and safety, brings this cultural container closer to all citizens to continue our plan to consolidate the leisure area as a cultural epicenter and a leisure benchmark for the city of Castellón, and also for employment thanks to the future technology hub."
Ibáñez emphasized that "all these actions ultimately aim to continue advancing in port-city integration, position the Port of Castellón as the best ally of its surroundings, and will change the entire physiognomy, generating spaces for coexistence for everyone that will become a pole of attraction for graueros, Castellón residents, and visitors."
The project included the demolition of the wooden bridge that crossed the fountain to improve pedestrian access and increase safety. In its place, two "T"-shaped walkways have been built, replacing the old wooden bridge, facilitating transit and ensuring a more comfortable and safe route for visitors and citizens.
The remodeling included the complete renovation of the hydraulic pumping system and the installation of integrated LED lighting in the basin, providing additional aesthetic and modern value during nighttime hours.
Similar to the Fuente del Centenario, which presides over the roundabout accessing the administrative area of PortCastelló and which, after several years of disuse, has recently been put into operation, the Fuente del Moruno will have operating hours for its hydraulic system and colored lighting, which will be extended during weekends, offering a safe and attractive space both day and night.
The objective of remodeling the Comandancia de Marina building of the Port Authority of Castellón is to convert the property into the new institutional headquarters of PortCastelló and improve the surroundings by creating an esplanade for public use.
This initiative adds to the coastal front transformation process promoted by the Port Authority, as it recovers a building that has been vacant since 2008 for new uses, in addition to changing the entire physiognomy of the nearby area with the creation of an open plaza that will provide access to the building and connect the promenade and the sea.
The remodeling of the property is included in PortCastelló's Investment Plan and has a budget of 6 million euros.
The building will have a total usable area of 2,585.25 m2 with a ground floor, which will house the Museo de la Mar, allowing the building to be open to the public with public services such as an exhibition hall, event space, and multi-purpose uses, and three upper floors for administrative uses.
The technology hub, already made available to the Generalitat Valenciana through a collaboration agreement, will change the physiognomy of the building with the possibility of attracting technology companies, innovation, labor, and employment, taking another step to revitalize the port's land border without neglecting the territory.
This ambitious project will generate opportunities and spaces for the development of new technologies.
According to the agreement, the Conselleria de Innovación will assume the concession of the Neocines building, where the technology hub will be developed, paying a fee of 6.6 million euros for a period of 30 years, with a five-year extension option. The agreement also regulates the use of this property and the annexed areas of Puerto Azahar.
