Santander, October 15, 2026. The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, and the vice-president of the IH Cantabria Foundation, Raúl Medina, have signed a research contract for the development and application of a methodology that allows for the design of resilient port infrastructures.
The objective is, as Díaz pointed out, “for the Port of Santander to anticipate increasingly frequent changes in demand, have more versatility in defining its operational strategies, adapt to the effects of global warming, and guarantee environmentally sustainable solutions.”
“The Port must be prepared to face these challenges and be able to apply them to the design and development of its infrastructures, in line with the objectives included in the Strategic Framework of the Spanish port system. All of this, furthermore, without compromising our conditions of functionality and reliability,” he reiterated.
Once the methodology is developed by IH Cantabria, it will be applied as a pilot project to the Marina del Cantábrico breakwater, an infrastructure that the APS plans to rehabilitate due to its poor condition, as part of the comprehensive reorganization of this port area and which is framed, as Díaz explained, “in the Port Authority's strategy to promote recreational boating as an engine of the region's blue economy,” through three new concessions.
The contract, which has a budget of 55,000 euros plus VAT and a duration of seven months, includes different tasks such as: a review and systematic analysis and design of resilient and sustainable port protection infrastructures; the formulation of a methodological framework replicable to other port works; the application of this methodology to the pilot case of the Marina del Cantábrico breakwater and the preparation of both the technical documentation obtained and a plan for the transfer of said information for the future replication of the methodology in other port works.
