Fincantieri, one of the world's leading shipbuilding complexes, and Teijin Automotive Technologies, the European subsidiary of Teijin Ltd. (a leading global Japanese group in advanced composite material solutions), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement initiates a collaboration focused on the engineering development of non-structural bulkheads made from composite materials for naval applications.
According to the terms of the agreement, Teijin Automotive Technologies will lead the engineering and industrialization activities with the support of Fincantieri. "The initiative seeks to introduce innovative composite material solutions into the naval sector, with a special focus on weight reduction and functional integration, in response to the highest operational and safety requirements demanded for naval units," stated the Italian firm.
The bulkheads will be manufactured using an innovative composite material patented by Aeronautical Service, which has successfully obtained non-combustibility certification, a fundamental requirement for its use on board vessels.
Fincantieri already collaborates with Aeronautical Service, an Italian SME specializing in advanced aerospace solutions, as part of activities aimed at promoting the large-scale adoption of carbon-based composites and cutting-edge technologies in both civil and military shipbuilding.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, commented that "this agreement confirms our role as pioneers in guiding the evolution of shipbuilding towards the best available technologies and high-performance solutions that go beyond the use of steel. By promoting the use of new-generation materials, we enable the development of lighter and more efficient units, while also opening up new design opportunities, previously unfeasible, particularly in the military sphere."
"This creates new perspectives for the sector, where innovation and operational excellence converge to define the future of maritime capabilities. Collaboration with top-tier partners like Teijin Automotive Technologies allows us to accelerate this transformation path and generate concrete value for our customers and for the entire reference ecosystem," he added.
Uwe Brinkmann, Managing Director of Teijin Automotive Technologies Europe, stated that "we are proud to collaborate with Fincantieri to introduce advanced composite materials into the future of shipbuilding. Together we aim to strengthen safety and sustainability, while promoting innovation across the maritime sector."
The alliance marks another step in Fincantieri's industrial strategy, aimed at expanding its technological competencies beyond traditional steel applications. "By accelerating the integration of advanced materials, the group seeks to consolidate its role as an innovation driver in high-tech maritime sectors," the company specified.
"The introduction of composite solutions in the naval field represents a significant technological leap, aiming to combine cutting-edge material engineering, increased safety, and sustainability within major strategic maritime programs," it concluded.
