The Port Authority of Almería (APA) is executing €30 million in European funds secured since 2023 thanks to 13 projects submitted to various subsidy lines, which promote the competitiveness of the ports of Almería and Carboneras through more sustainable services, facilities, and infrastructure, and with them, the economic development of the province of Almería. The total investment in these works amounts to €70 million.
The Port Authority of Almería has secured European funding for 13 submitted projects, representing an investment of €70 million.
The works with the largest pre-assigned co-financing are the expansion of Muelle de Pechina and the electrical line and substation for the implementation of the OPS system.
President Rosario Soto highlights the coordination, effort, and efficiency of the port authority's technical team in promoting the projects, which meet the requirements, especially in terms of sustainability, demanded by each aid line and contribute to the improvement of port activity and services and the generation of new business opportunities for the growth of the general interest ports of the State in Almería, and to execute them as committed. In this regard, the president detailed that, of the 13 planned actions with European co-financing, six are already completed, and the remaining 7, which are expected to conclude in 2029, are in the project drafting and bidding phase.
The infrastructures and facilities with the greatest economic support from the European Union are the transmission line and electrical substation, which will be tendered in November with a planned investment of €15.5 million, for the implementation of OPS (Onshore Power Supply). The substation will have a capacity of up to 20 MW, and Endesa has already authorized 8 MW. With this, the Port of Almería will be able to power up to 5 regular line vessels simultaneously, minimizing CO2 and noise emissions.
Also, the expansion of Muelle de Pechina, an action in the awarding phase, with an investment of €26 million and an execution period of 2 years, has received €6 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF funds), for being considered strategic for the promotion of an Efficient and Sustainable Trans-European Transport Network. It will contribute to attracting investment and increasing traffic.
With European co-financing, the Port Authority of Almería has made its buildings more energy-efficient. Thus, it has already completed the envelope of the administrative building, carried out the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Varadero, and has in project the envelope of the maritime station and annexed buildings, which will involve an investment of more than €4 million.
Regarding renewable energies, the photovoltaic energy plants for self-consumption on the roof of the Border Control Post are operational, as are those installed on the Ribiera II warehouses of 660 KW, those at the Port of Carboneras are in project, and the one for the Muelle de Ribera I parking lot at the Port of Almería is in tender, specifically over 1 hectare of roofs, which will provide shade to the pre-boarding area; an installation with a power of 885 kW, with which the APA will achieve its objective of a zero-carbon footprint in terms of direct electricity consumption: 100% of the electricity directly consumed by the port authority in the Port of Almería will come from renewable energy by 2027.
Other actions carried out by the APA with economic support from the European Union include equipment for border control through the Entry/Exit System (EES) – European Entry and Exit System for the control of third-country passengers; the second-hand fish sales center; the clean point and waste delivery center in the Fishing Port of Almería, and energy efficiency facilities related to port lighting.
