The Port of Santander (Spain) registered a year-on-year growth of 3.7% in cargo handling during the January-August 2026 period. A total of 4,787,894 tons of cargo movement was reported.
According to the Port Authority of Santander (APS), "during this time, general merchandise, which represents 52.2% of the total merchandise passing through the port, increased by 2.5%, and solid bulk by 6.1%, while liquids decreased by 7.5%."
Furthermore, it was detailed that "the growth in container traffic is noteworthy, reaching 114,396 TEUs - 20-foot containers - 7.4% more than between January and August 2025. As for automobiles, with 216,860 units, they exceeded the figure obtained in the previous year by 2.5%."
Regarding cruise ships, it was indicated that "with 23 calls accounted for up to August 31, they increased by 35% compared to the 17 last year, while passengers increased by 54%, going from 24,349 in 2025 to 37,528 so far this year."
In this regard, the president of the APS, César Díaz, stated that "this is another of the objectives we had set. Converting this traffic into the most prominent in the port directly impacts, thanks to its significant added value, the economy and employment of Cantabria, which is our main raison d'être," he concluded.
