August proved a significant month for cruise operations in Riga, with the Latvian capital handling 18 cruise ships carrying approximately 25,000 passengers. The month's activity contributed to what has already been a strong cruise season for the Baltic destination.
By the end of July, Riga had counted around 90,000 international cruise passengers, with Germany, the US and the UK representing the primary source markets.
August saw three premium cruise ships visit Riga for the first time: Scenic Eclipse II, Seven Seas Grandeur and Explora III.
Several ships made multiple visits to the port, whilst five days recorded simultaneous arrivals of two cruise vessels.
The largest vessel to call during August was the 115,875 GT Sapphire Princess, in contrast to Grand Circle Cruise Line's Clio (3,504 GT) which also visited Riga.
By August's conclusion, 55 cruise ships had called at the Port of Riga during the current season, representing a 15% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
The growth results from ongoing cooperation between the Riga Freeport Authority, the Municipality of Riga, the Riga Investment and Tourism Agency, among others, in promoting Riga as a Baltic Sea cruise destination.
Riga's cruise season commenced on May 3 with the arrival of Plantours' Hamburg and will conclude on December 26 with AIDAprima's overnight stay. The port expects 98 cruise ship calls for the complete season.
Current data and forecasts indicate cruise passenger numbers visiting Riga will be approximately 30% higher than the previous year, confirming the continued expansion of cruise operations in the city.
