(1:00 p.m. EDT) — MSC Group's Cruise Division celebrated the official groundbreaking ceremony for Sandy Cay, the company's new luxury private island destination in the Bahamas.
Located next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Sandy Cay was initially announced in 2026 and is scheduled to welcome passengers in 2028. The new private island is being developed exclusively for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests and is meant to complement Ocean Cay by offering a "distinct, intimate, elevated and immersive experience," according to the cruise company.
Sandy Cay's amenities will focus on wellness, relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings, offering five beaches within the secluded island escape setting. According to the cruise line, the new island destination will also offer dining venues, spaces to relax, and private retreats.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by representatives from MSC Group's Cruise Division — including executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago — as well as government officials from The Bahamas and other key stakeholders.
Although the ceremony is meant to mark an important milestone in the development of the destination, work on Sandy Cay has already been underway for some time ahead of its 2028 debut.
